"Magazine Columns-Backbone of Every Good Layout" Reflection
I really enjoyed the visual examples included in this article! I like how this article really defined and explained the importance of grids and design layouts, because these are crucial elements in design. When I was looking at the visual example for the 3-column grid, I was thinking that the text looked a bit too spread out, and some of the graphics seemed to be sized a bit weird as well. When the author then stated that they switched gears to a 12-column layout, I was kind of skeptical, because that sounded like a lot of columns, and I thought it might be a little too complex. However, after seeing the visual examples and after I read the author’s explanation and process for designing with these 12-column grids, I came to agree that this layout was useful. Initially, I thought it might be complicated to try and fit all the information within the grid lines while also making readable and proportional, but the visual examples showed me that the amount of text on the design would be the same, it was just arranged differently. The 12-column grid allowed for more space for the graphics and placed the text in a way that was easy to read. I also really like the versatility of the grid! Overall, this article was very helpful in explaining the importance of grids and how to use them!
